Mt Sinai in Egypt is 7497 ft.
Estes Park, CO is 7522 ft.
If elevation is the main ingredient in meeting God, than keep an eye out for an ominous cloud strolling the streets of some Rocky Mountain town.
Height has always meant something to us, and throughout history high places have always stood for sacred spaces. I grew up with Mt Rainier looming in the background of every gorgeous Seattle skyline view. The indigenous name is Mt.Tahoma or Tacoma, & this dormant volcano has always held some kind of supernatural aura over the landscape. In fact just look up Sacred Mountains on Wikipedia and you’ll find high sacred spaces around the world over.
I’m not saying that height is NOT a thing. There is something about height that is transformative… which is a change of perspective. A new way of seeing what you thought you knew how to see. But getting to new heights is fairly easy for us. We can sit in a window seat on an airplane or ride an elevator to the observation deck of the newest skyscraper in town. Getting to new heights doesn’t cost us very much these days.
And maybe that’s it right there…. The price of a new perspective. Maybe it’s not so much the height but the sacrifice of going on a journey to gain a new perspective. It’s in the relentless march up the mountain side that we are humbled, worn down, losing our boring narratives about who we are and what is really happening, being prepared to have open hearts, ears, eyes to what could potentially be transformed.
You may need a mountain today… Shit, everyday in the cultural climate feels like climbing a mountain, doesn’t it?… But if a mountain is not close at hand, don’t be discouraged. Sacred transformation is still available.
Simply find a place to be still for a few minutes.
Close your eyes and, with deep earnest, whisper this prayer….
“I lay down my knowing of
HOW everything is,
WHO everyone is, especially me, and
WHY everything is….
…and I trade all my limited conclusions for a pair of new eyes, new ears, and a fresh and tireless heart that witnesses the world from the perspective of the Divine.”
Today is your Exodus from the old way of seeing everything.
Transformative for me. Changing your view is not always up, a single degree can change everything.
I love God’s synchronicity!! I passed through another recognition of a loveless block with repentance and surrender this morning as I was needing to respond to a troubled soul and only felt irritation. But I handed the burden to our Lord, wrote from a humbled heart. And now reading your post - another new commitment to a change of perspective. Thank you.
