Image Contemplation - Tables are Sacred
It seems to me that the only deciding ingredient between the sacred and the secular is Intentionality.
On any given Sunday, millions of people around the world will gather around the communion table to remember the Grace given to all.
Also, on any given Sunday, billions of people will gather around meals to receive the gift of nourishment.
It’s interesting to think that our most sacred symbols are really just based in the sacred human activities we already partake in.
It seems to me that the only deciding ingredient between the sacred and the secular is Intentionality.

I’ve been working on this Communion image off and on for a few months. I wanted to make something that alluded to the act of gathering around the table. That this simple act always has the potential to reveal something sacred.
I grew up Lutheran and communion was a once the month big time event at our church. In fact I couldn’t even partake in the practice until I had gone through two years of confirmation class. But later on in my life, I’ve been apart of meals that were so wonderful, hopeful, restorative, and dare I say worshipful, that I wanted to pass the queso dish and pitcher of margarita and invite my friends to “do this in remembrance of Grace.”
A meal can change a heart. In fact the hand illustration in this image nods to the shape of a heart. I think as I get older, and I ask more questions about the tradition I grew up through, and why we do what we do, every now and then I’m blown away at how these sacraments weren’t made to initiate one into a club, but to awaken the pilgrim that they are already on the right path.
This latest illustration is called Communion Cruciform.
Here are some past communion illustrations……

Thank you for reading Image Pilgrimage. Doing creative work in the world is impossible without the interest, care, and support of others. I’m so glad you’re here. I get asked all the time how I can be supported as an artist. One of the ways is supporting through a paid subscription here. Easy, huh?
…and if a paid subscription isn’t for you just shoot me a request at artforstory@gmail.com and I’ll hook you up for free!
Upcoming face to face meetings….
Speaking of sacred experiences, an unforeseen set of Say Yes shows has come together at the end of the year. If you’re not familiar with my show, Say Yes is a multi-media storytelling comedy art show about the Voice of Giving Up in our lives and the mental health and spiritual practices I embrace to move through these arguments. It’s funny, deep, and nothing you’ve ever experienced.
